Western Express is a fast-paced 2D side-scrolling shooter that I have developed, set entirely on a moving train in the Wild West. My goal has been to create an action-packed experience where the player, as a lone gunslinger, fights off bandits across multiple train cars. The game features a pixel art aesthetic, dynamic level layouts, and tactical combat that requires both quick reflexes and strategic movement.
Level Design & Gameplay
I have designed the train itself as the core gameplay environment, ensuring that movement and combat feel fluid and engaging.
The multi-level train cars have been structured to encourage both vertical and horizontal exploration, allowing players to jump, crouch, climb ladders, and navigate obstacles while staying aware of enemy threats.
Each train car has been designed with different combat dynamics in mind:
- Passenger cars create tight, close-quarters combat.
- Cargo wagons provide cover with stacked crates.
- Flatbed cars leave players exposed, increasing risk.
I have carefully planned these layouts to make use of height differences and movement mechanics, ensuring that combat remains dynamic and varied.
